Catacomb 3-D, also known as Catacomb 3-D: A New Dimension, Catacomb 3-D: The Descent or Catacombs 3, is a first person shooter game developed by id Software and released by Softdisk in November 1991 for PC (MS-DOS).

It is the first FPS of the same name series, after two top-down shooters, Catacomb 3-D: The Descent is regarded as a landmark title in terms of first-person graphics and probably the first example of the modern, character-based first person shooter genre, since it is a direct ancestor to the games that popularized the genre.

Using the Wolfenstein 3D engine prototype, the game introduced the concept of showing the player’s hand in the three-dimensional view point and other elements that were later used not only in Wolfenstein 3D but it almost any other game that succeed it, like Spear of Destiny, Doom, Heretic and HeXeN.

The plot is simple but effective: In a dark fantasy setting, the player takes control of the high wizard Petton Everhail while he descends into the catacomb of the Towne Cemetery to defeat the evil lich Nemesis and rescue Grelminar, seu amigo.

The game you have here is the exact MS-DOS version emulated directly into your browser, without the need of downloading or installing anything. The emulation is pretty smooth, by the way.
