Overview

Double Dragon is a beat ’em up set in a a post-apocalyptic New York, where Billy and Jimmy Lee, twin brothers trained in the fighting style of Sou-Setsu-Ken, fight the “Black Warriors”, a savage street gang led by a man named Willy which kidnapped Billy’s girlfriend, Marian.

Developed by Technōs Japan and initially published by Taito to the arcades in 1987, Double Dragon pushed the already successful Renegade‘s formula even farther, and was a big hit. It eventually spawned a big gaming franchise with tens of titles, not to mention the crossovers and stuff. The game was ported to several other platforms, and the version we have here is the Sega Master System one, where it’s ready to be played online, in your browser, without the need of downloading or installing anything.

The Master System version became famous since it supports two friends playing it simultaneously, like in the arcades, something that the NES version didn’t provide, although the graphics are similar to this other port (and to the Game Boy’s one as well). It’s a great old game overall.

Have fun!

Plot

The Black Warriors kidnapped Billy’s girlfriend, Marian, and demand the Lee brothers disclose their martial arts secrets in exchange for Marian’s freedom. Out of the garage of the small training school where they teach self-defense, The Lee brothers set out on a rescue mission to crush the Black Warriors and save Marian.

Using whatever techniques they have at their disposal, from the basic punches and kicks to flying kicks and the elbow strike, as well any weapon that comes into their hands, the Lee brothers must pursue the gang through the city slum, industrial area and the forest before reaching their hideout to confront the big boss, Willy, or, as my brothers and I used to call him, the Machine Gun Guy.
