Overview

Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse (ミッキーマウスのキャッスルイリュージョン), or simply Castle of Illusion, is a cute, fun and classic 2D platform game where Minnie Mouse has been kidnapped by the evil witch Mizrabel, and it’s up to Mickey now to venture through the mysterious worlds to rescue her.

To save his girlfriend from Mizrabel, Mickey must face the Castle of Illusion, a fantastic place filled with dangerous wonders, crossing six levels (including a magical forest, a toy land and a candy world), where he must collect the gems of the rainbow in order to confront and defeat the witch.

Each level features unique obstacles, themes, enemies and a final boss. The foes can be defeated by jumping and landing with your butt on top of them. An alternative way is to pick up objects lying around (like rocks in the forest or blue balls in the toy level) and throwing them at the enemies.

Mickey’s ability to pick up things and carry them around also leads to some sort of puzzle-oriented gameplay, by the way. By placing objects in the right spot and jumping off of them, he can get to otherwise inaccessible areas. In some levels, he also has to collect keys to open doors. A unique type of object is the treasure chest – by crashing it with your back or throwing it, Mickey gets access to its contents, which might include extra lives, a health power-up or coins to collect for points.

Castle of Illusion was developed by Sega and initially released on 1990 to Mega Drive/Genesis. Master System then got its version, which is a bit different, but also awesome and the one we have here ready to be played online, on your browser (HTML5). Game Gear also got a port in the following year. It spawned a series of games known as Illusion.
