Andro Dunos

Overview

Andro Dunos is a challenging side-scrolling shoot ’em up game puts players in control of the Yellow Cherry and Red Fox, advanced and powerful space combat ships, in humanity’s last effort to defeat an invading alien force. It was developed by Visco Corporation and initially released to the arcades in 1992, which is the version we have here online, ready for you to play in your browser (HTML5).

This shooter visually resembles classics such as R-Type and Darius, but brings its own concepts, such as system of different weapon configurations switchable by players (up to two simultaneously in co-op). There are power-ups that increase the power of your arsenal. If the main weapon’s level is two or higher, it’s possible to perform a powerful shot that deals significant damage to enemies by charging the fire button and releasing it at the desired moment. Each weapon has its own special shot. The game features seven stages filled with enemies of different patterns and a boss at the end of each one.

Overall, the game received mixed reviews from critics and unfairly went unnoticed, as it has quality and originality, although some parts are somewhat tedious. At the time, it only received a port for the SNK Neo-Geo AES home console in July 1992. It wasn’t until 2012 that an official version for Neo Geo CD was released, and in August 2022, it was converted to Dreamcast.

Plot

Humanity faces a worsening invasion by a mysterious alien lifeform whose advance threatens both Earth’s defenses and the core of the enemy stronghold. As hope fades, humanity deploys its most advanced weapons: the Yellow Cherry and Red Fox fighters. Pilots launch into multi-directional combat zones on a final mission to break through the alien front, strike at their heart, and end the assault once and for all.

Controls

• Directional – Arrow Keys (Move)
• Button B – X (Shoot)
• Button A – Z (Change weapons)
• Hold shoot and release for a powerful attack (when available).
• Insert Coin – Shift
• Start – Enter
• Attention – These controls are default for Player 1. Hover your mouse into the lower part of the screen and a control bar will show up. Click on the gamepad icon and set the Player 2 controls if you want to play Andro Dunos with a friend.
