Overview
Wing Commander Academy is an American science fiction animated series based on the Wing Commander franchise, as you might expect.
Very engaging and with a visual style reminiscent of the excellent 90s Spider-Man cartoon (Spider-Man: The Animated Series), Wing Commander Academy loosely served as a prequel to the game series. It was produced by Universal Cartoon Studios, a division of Universal Pictures, along with a team led by Larry Latham. It originally aired from September 21 to December 21, 1996, on the USA Network’s “USA Action Extreme Team” block.
The series features many spaceships introduced in the Wing Commander games. The Scimitar and Broadsword were the main fighters and bombers piloted by the main characters, with the Dralthi and Grikath fulfilling those roles for the Kilrathi. As in Wing Commander I, the TCS Tiger’s Claw was a Bengal-class aircraft carrier. Individual episodes also featured appearances of ships introduced in later games, such as the Arrow, Hellcat, and Longbow from Wing Commander III, and the Avenger from Wing Commander IV. None of these ships, however, are mentioned by name. A number of new flagship vessels were introduced by the series, including the Achilles-class destroyer and the Agan Ra Sivar-class dreadnaught.
In March 2012, Visual Entertainment released Wing Commander Academy – The Complete Series on DVD in Region 1 for the first time. The series was made available on the Peacock streaming service in July 2020.
