Overview

Developed by SNK and initially released in 1990, The Super Spy is a nice old game that blends beat ’em up, first-person shooting, and RPG elements. The gameplay is reminiscent of Crossed Swords (1991), but within a setting that seems lifted straight from the best action movies of the 1980s.

Play it’s arcade version here online, in your browser (HTML5), as you step into the shoes of a secret agent tasked with infiltrating a heavily guarded facility, dismantling a terrorist operation, and saving innocent hostages. Progress through the tight corridors of The Super Spy by mixing hand-to-hand strikes, accurate gunfire, and timely blocks — and you only move forward once every foe in the area has been dealt with. Freeing hostages restores your health, unlocks weapon upgrades, grants stronger gear, or drops bits of story lore, while the environment itself — from explosive barrels to steam pipes — can be used to your advantage. The combat takes inspiration from titles like Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, relying on alternating between punches, kicks, knives, and firearms (all upgradeable) while facing faster, tougher enemy types, mini-boss encounters, and mission-ending bosses. You may even get access to a machine gun from a rescued hostage or charge up a powerful punch — tricky to land, but devastating when it connects.

Released among the first games for SNK’s then-new Neo Geo AES console and MVS arcade system, The Super Spy stands out not only for being alongside titles such as Magician Lord, NAM-1975, and Cyber-Lip. The game boasts impressive graphics, solid controls, and a nostalgic, cinematic theme. It is also worth noting that the main antagonist King resembles Geese Howard, from Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters.
