Overview

Step into the cybernetic shadows with this online version for browsers (HTML5) of The Cyber Shinobi, a futuristic sequel to the arcade classic Shinobi that throws you into a world where ninja justice meets high-tech warfare. This action-packed side-scrolling platformer with beat’ em up elements was developed by Sega and released in 1991 exclusively for their Master System, being the third game of this franchise in the 8-bit console, after Shinobi itself and Alex Kidd in Shinobi World.

The Cyber Shinobi is a single-player game consisting of six rounds where you must fight your way through waves of enemy ninjas using melee attacks like sword slashes and crouching kicks, while also relying on special attacks and Ninjutsu magic. Power-ups found throughout the levels enhance the player’s life, power, shot capacity, and available Ninjutsu. Unlike the original Shinobi, progression in this game often requires defeating all enemies on screen before advancing, adding the aforementioned beat-’em-up style to the traditional platforming.

The player’s status is tracked by four gauges displayed at the top of the screen: Life, Power, Shot, and Ninjutsu. Destroying item containers grants upgrades marked with the letters “L”, “P”, “S”, and “N”, each corresponding to one of these gauges. The Shot gauge governs a selection of ranged sub-weapons—starting with a shuriken launcher, which can later be upgraded to a Vulcan gun or grenades. Each weapon holds up to eight shots and reverts to the previous one when depleted.

The Ninjutsu system features four elemental spells: Fire, Tornado, Lightning, and Earth Element. Each requires a different gauge level to access, but only consumes two units when used, allowing the player to cast multiple spells before exhausting their magic. The jump height can also be adjusted by holding up on the directional pad while jumping.

Story

In the 21st century, Joe Musashi’s grandson—also named Joe—takes up the mantle of the shinobi to stop a new global threat. After the fall of the Zeed organization, a group of its remnants has reformed as Cyber-Zeed, a terrorist group responsible for coordinated attacks on nuclear power plants worldwide.

Cyber-Zeed has stolen a stockpile of plutonium equivalent to 100,000 megatons of explosive power, leaving their name at every scene, and they plan to use this nuclear terror to bring the world to its knees.

Since conventional military forces from every nation have tried and failed to stop them, it’s up to Joe to finish what his grandfather started. Armed with his sword, Ninjutsu, and determination, he must infiltrate enemy strongholds across six dangerous stages—including a construction site, a harbor, a heliport, a jungle, a waterfall, and Cyber-Zeed’s final hideout—to eliminate the threat once and for all.
