Overview

Spider-Man: The Videogame (or Spider-Man: The Video Game) is a side-scrolling beat ’em up with platforming sections where the Web-Head and his allies — Black Cat, Hawkeye, and Namor — battle a huge gallery of enemies drawn from their original stories in order to recover a mystical artifact from the hands of the Kingpin and then from Doctor Doom. It was developed by Sega and released to arcades in 1991. What we have here is its World version, ready to be played online, in your browser (HTML5), without the need of installations and other hassles.

Up to four players can take part simultaneously and cooperatively in a match. The protagonists have the ability to attack, throw enemies, jump, perform aerial attacks, unleash a special move that consumes energy, and execute a longer-range aerial attack. Each character has their own quirks — Spider-Man uses his webs, Black Cat uses a cable with a grappling hook, Hawkeye uses his bow and arrows, and Namor uses an electric discharge —, but, in their cores, they all play more or less the same.

Every stage features a platforming section that somewhat resembles Shinobi or Moonwalker, where long-range attacks can always be used. There are also bosses and sub-bosses to face, all popular Marvel villains such as Venom, Scorpion, Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Sandman, and the Lizard. These parts are purely 2D, while the proper brawler sections allows you to move in the traditional eight directions.

Spider-Man: The Video Game was generally well received by both critics and the market at the time, featuring large and highly detailed sprites, graphics that seem to have been drawn by comic book artists, solid controls, and other above-average features. However, the game never received any sequels, probably due to copyright issues.
