Night of the Living Dead is an independent adventure in the survival horror style based on the classic movie of the same name from 1968 and heavily inspired by Resident Evil. The game was developed by Stefano Cagnani (Steven Games Studio) and was initially released on November 20, 2024.

Following a storyline similar to the film but with new characters and some changes, the game effectively recreates the eerie, black-and-white atmosphere of the original. It was designed both for longtime fans of the Dead series, offering a fresh take on the classic, and for newcomers, serving as an introduction to this seminal horror franchise.

Night of the Living Dead is a short, free fangame for Windows that doesn’t require high-end hardware to run—but let’s be honest, that doesn’t mean any old office PC will handle it smoothly!

Trivia

  • Night of the Living Dead was developed using Unreal Engine, probably version 4, judging by Stefano’s other works.
  • For those unfamiliar, Night of the Living Dead is the film directed by George A. Romero that established a type of monster that has since become very common in pop culture: the cannibalistic human undead, which can only be killed (again) with a head shot. Romero referred to them simply as ghouls, but the public started calling them zombies, and the name stuck.
  • Still on the original Night of the Living Dead, despite being one of the most influential horror films in history, its budget was only $114,000, and the fake blood was made with chocolate syrup. The film fell into the public domain due to a copyright registration error, allowing for numerous distributions and adaptations without major issues. There are also plenty of remakes out there.
