Demon's Souls Demake

Demon’s Souls Demake, or Demon of the Ashes, is a Demon’s Souls fangame with visuals inspired by the PlayStation 1 style, including polygonal graphics. It was developed by Stefano Cagnani (Steven Games Studio) and initially released on February 27, 2024.

Simple and with some limitations, including view distance to emulate the PS1 layout, and even some bugs, the game still brings a challenging and fun experience along with iconic aspects of Demon’s Souls, such as cemeteries and skeleton enemies.

In addition, Demon’s Souls Demake is a completely free action-adventure. In other words, those who are into titles from the era of Sony’s first console may want to play it quickly without any commitment to destroy some demonic abominations in third person in a dark medieval fantasy setting.

Demon’s Souls Demake/Demon of the Ashes is an action-adventure that combines exploration, simple combat, PS1-era graphics, and nostalgic challenges. It is described by some as an experimental project aimed at fans of retro games and nostalgia, offering a simple and fun experience, although limited in scope.

In a game, the player explores linear areas and faces enemies with a basic combat system, where attacks are performed via mouse or keyboard. There is the possibility of dodging and using healing items, which can be recovered by saving progress. The game has a stamina-limited flight mechanic, something unusual and not present in the original Demon’s Souls.

Enemies range from skeletons, which can be defeated with a single hit, to dogs, considered the most challenging in the game due to their agility and difficulty. Interactions with the environment are intentionally limited, such as the fact that it is not possible to open doors or collect items from boxes. The final boss is accessed after linear progression through the game’s areas. While not considered difficult per se, overuse of healing items can make the fight challenging.

Areas such as graveyards and narrow corridors are designed to evoke the atmosphere of Demon’s Souls. In addition, this remake uses graphics and mechanics that simulate the technical limitations of PS1-era games, such as low draw distance and simple animations.

Demon’s Souls Demake may experience technical issues, including control glitches and crashes that require restarting progress. Dying from unexpected interactions, such as breaking boxes, adds unpredictability to the experience.
