Cadillacs and Dinosaurs [Animated series]

Overview

Here we have the full Cadillacs and Dinosaurs animated series, with all its 13 episodes and almost five hours of running time, so we can watch this sci-fi cartoon that, like Capcom’s excellent 1993 beat ’em up of the same name, is based on Xenozoic Tales, an independent comic book series by Mark Schultz.

The TV show cartoon was created by screenwriter Steven E. de Souza, who acquired the television rights after producing the Cadillacs and Dinosaurs game. It originally aired between 1993 and 1994, and it truly feels like a product of the 1990s.

The cartoon is set in the year 2512 and follows Jack Tenrec and his team of ecological freedom fighters known as the “Mechanics” in a post-apocalyptic jungle near the ruins of New York City, now known as “The City in the Sea.” In the series, societies had to relearn 20th-century technology, lost due to a never-explicitly-mentioned catastrophe, and were only partially successful in doing so, although the Mechanics retained much of the technology and knowledge of the “Old World.”

Jack’s often reluctant companion is Hannah Dundee, a beautiful ambassador from Wasoon, somewhere further south, which is technologically far behind the City in the Sea. She hires Jack as a liaison as she tries to establish clear communication between her homeland and this modern civilization. There’s also Mustapha Cairo (the best in the game, by the way), an engineer and Jack’s companion who frequently aids him in his efforts. We don’t know why Mess isn’t around, though.

Another interesting detail about the universe in which this TV series is set is that, since the catastrophe, much of the former United States has fallen into savagery, with many dinosaur species spontaneously reappearing after having gone extinct. Together, Jack and Hannah face serious problems faced by the futuristic environment humanity has now inhabited.

Jack also has Hermes, a juvenile “Cutter” (Allosaurus) whom Jack raised after the latter’s mother died. Gentle with Jack and Hannah, Hermes can still be quite ferocious when angered. The animation also features a race of intelligent lizards called “Griths.”

Through the series, Jack and his team face opposition, including the Council of Governors triumvirate; Jack’s archenemy, Wilhelmina Scharnhorst; and Hammer Terhune’s gang.
